Dan and Nan's hoose are former farm workers cottages, nestled beside a river, bridge and wood, the cottages are surrounded by working farmland.
There are plenty of things to see and do, all within a walk, bike ride or short drive from the cottages.
You will find more information below, alternatively exploring a bit is a great way to find new and unexpected places!
Our cottages are approximately 7 miles from the Mull of Kintyre (single track road) which is on the Kintyre Way.
Short walks
A walk around the village takes in Keil caves, St Columba's footsteps and Dunaverty.
Walking to and round Davaar island is about 4 miles. There's a lovely hill walk in Campbeltown with views over the loch called Beinn Ghuilean (pronounced Ben Gullion) which again is 4 miles.
Longer walks
Southend to Machrihanish, is 18 miles and is part of the Kintyre Way.
Campbeltown to Southend follows mostly single track road and is nearly 16 miles.
More information on all of these walks can be found in the cottages with details ondifficulty & length, maps etc. for guest use.
A great resource for walks can be found here: www.walkhighlands.co.uk
Visit one of the many islands that sit off the west coast of Scotland. The closest are Gigha and Arran.
- Gigha -
Gigha is a small island just off the village of Tayinloan 19 miles north of Campbeltown on the A83. A 20 minute ferry crossing, travel as a foot passenger or take the car. The island is 7 miles long by 1.5 miles wide. The Boathouse restaurant is opened seasonally (Spring to Autumn) and is well known for its fine seafood. Booking is advised.
- Arran -
The island of Arran is locally known as "God's country". The 20 minute ferry crossing is from Claonaig, which is en route to the village of Skipness on the east of the peninsula.
From Southend, Claonaig is a 55 minute drive. Please check the Arran website to find out what it has to offer.
In the evening, the seals are a common sight lazing on the rocks. If you're lucky, you may see a pod of dolphins swim past the shoreline. As well as this, there are many seabirds and wild flowers to ponder.
The birdlife and wildlife is rich and varied.
Otters, ducks, geese and magnificent wild goats are all within a few short miles.
Follow the road for another 1.5miles till you come to Dunaverty Golf Course. This is a renowned 18 hole course with breathtaking views.
Alternatively Machrihanish is approximately 12 miles away and has 2 golf courses, Machrihanish Golf Club and Machrihanish Dunes.
Very close to the cottages (approximately 5 miles) is Wilder Ways pony trekking centre.
Westport beach near Machrihanish (12 miles away) is extremely popular with surfers, so bring your board!
Davaar Island is just beyond Campbeltown. Walk across the tidal causeway to view the painting of the Cruxifiction in the cave which was painted by local artist Archibald MacKinnon in 1887. Throughout the years, local artists have touched up the painting.
Near to the cottages, food, snacks and meals are served in the clubhouse and if that isn't enough, the tearoom in the heart of the village is famous for its prize winning cakes.
Further afield is the Ugadale Hotel, which offers food and refreshment after a walk on the beach or a day on the greens.
There is also the Old Clubhouse which is adjacent to Ugadale Hotel serving meals in a more casual atmosphere.
Campbeltown has 3 whisky distilleries:
• Springbank
• Glen Scotia
• Glengyle
All 3 do tasting and tours and Springbank offer a local produce lunch platter by arrangement.
There is also a shop, post office and pub located in the local village.
More shopping and entertainment can be found in Campbeltown (10 miles away) which has a swimming pool and gym, cinema, museum, heritage centre, a range of shops, 2 supermarkets and several cafes and restaurants.
